Egypt update – March 3, 2011

See also LSW background information on the uprising in Egypt, 2011.

Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq has been replaced by former transport minister, Essam Sharaf, who opposed Mubarak and, after stepping down from the cabinet, joined the demonstrators.

The demonstrators had demanded that Shafig be replaced along with other members of the cabinet.

Workers are demonstrating for higher wages and better working conditions.

The constitution, which the military suspended, is waiting to be rewritten, parties and organisatons are still forbidden, and a free election is promised within the forseeable future that will hopefully bring civilian rule, the cabinet still contains many from the old regime and is in need of an infusion of civilians, along with the previously mentioned demands made by labor.
