Juan Cole on David Broder’s Suggestion to Threaten War on Iran In Order for Obama to Save His Presidency

Given that LSW mentioned David Broder’s Washington Post column, “How Obama might recover”, LSW wishes to suggest that readers take a look at Juan Cole’s much more nuanced and insightful post “On How War with Iran might Destroy the United States”.

Cole takes issue with the notion that war is good for an economy (Cole has a lot of backing by various economists on this, LSW believes, comments can be written to dispute this), and also takes issue with Broder’s contention that Obama has no tools to get the economy going and cites suggestions by Krugman. Cole notes that the Vietnam War was not good the economy.

LSW thinks that policy built on the notion that war is good for an economy should be sent into exile. Obviously, no good can come of a country on permanent war footing. Seeds of destruction, in LSW’s respectful opinion.

Cole takes note of the severe rise in the price of oil which no doubt follow even the rumor of an attack on Iran which would negatively affect the U.S. economy.

He also goes into the demographics and politics of the region, specifically the possible reactions an attack on Shiite Iran would produce in the Shiites in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and the Levant. None of these responses would benefit either the U.S. economy or the U.S.’s military efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan.

As usual, Juan Cole illuminates the issue on several dimensions.
