The New York Times on events in Iraq Oct. 2010

The New York Times published a story on “hundreds of the well-disciplined fighters — many of whom have gained extensive knowledge about the American military — appear to have rejoined Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia.” The subject here are the Awakening Councils, Sunnis, who turned away from fighting the occupation forces, as part of the so-called surge, to assist the occupation.

The emergence of the Awakening Councils played a major part in the decline of violence in Iraq in the mid 2000s. The Iraqi government, such as it is, is not fulfilling its obligations toward the Awakening Councils who are uncertain concerning the actions and intentions towards them by the Shia government.

Should the Awakening Councils return to violence directed at the government or Sunnis Iraq would be seriously destabilized.
