The Tea Party Express, Billionaires and Obama

Here is a slim summary of the Tea Party Express’ financial backers (and controllers one assumes):

The billionaire oil brothers David and Charles Koch (whose father, Fred, was an early member of the John Birch society):

“The anti-government fervor infusing the 2010 elections represents a political triumph for the Kochs. By giving money to “educate,” fund, and organize Tea Party protesters, they have helped turn their private agenda into a mass movement”

from a New Yorker
article by Jane Mayer.

The rest of the information here stems from a Sourcewatch article:

“Reports indicate that the Tea Party Movement benefits from millions of dollars from conservative foundations that are derived from wealthy U.S. families and their business interests. Is appears that money to organize and implement the Movement flows primarily through two conservative groups: Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks.”

But these rich people have not given birth to the sentiments and anger which suffuses this quasi-movement. The bailouts of the banks, the corresponding lack of bailouts of home owners, the backroom deals with the pharmacy industry and the health insurance companies made in order to get health insurance reform passed, under funded economic stimulation measures, all contribute to the anger fueling the Tea Party. While the Republicans refused to allow any Obama sponsored legislation to pass Obama’s lack of willingness to publicly take on the big financial and political interests left a humongous room open for the Tea Party to move into.

Had Obama stood firm against the Republicans and the monied class he could have built on the elation and willingness to fight for change which he inspired in millions during the election campaign. He might not have gotten health care reform and financial reform passed but he could created a momentum in the society that could lead to renewed legislative attempts in a Congress in which Just-Say-No-Republicans and reluctant Democrats would have been given the boot.

His own conservative cautious nature may well have doomed his presidency.
